The Met: Live in HD transmission of I Puritani to be broadcast worldwide on January 10

New York, NY (December 1, 2025)—The Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Bellini’s I Puritani premieres on December 31, marking the first new staging in 50 years. Five additional performances continue through January 18, 2026.

Soprano Lisette Oropesa stars as Elvira, opposite tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Lord Arturo Talbot, bringing together two of today’s leading interpreters of the bel canto repertoire. Oropesa, who first sang Elvira in 2022, has since made the role a signature of hers. She returns later this season as Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata. Brownlee adds to his remarkable run of bel canto triumphs, following his appearances earlier this season as Tonio in Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment and Elvino in Bellini’s La Sonnambula.

The new production marks Charles Edwards’s Met directorial debut. Known internationally for his imaginative stage and set designs, Edwards has previously created scenery for four Met productions by David McVicar, beginning with Verdi’s Il Trovatore in 2009. Edward’s staging of I Puritani remains rooted in the opera’s 17th-century English Civil War setting and reveals the psychological intensity at the heart of Bellini’s final work.

Completing the all-star principal cast are baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo Forth and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Giorgio Walton. Conductor Marco Armiliato—who leads his third New Year’s Eve gala premiere—conducts.

Edwards’s creative team includes costume designer Gabrielle Dalton, lighting designer Tim Mitchell, and movement director Tim Claydon—all making their company debuts. I Puritani has been performed only 63 times since its first Met performance in 1883.
