Giordano’s Andrea Chénier Returns to the Met Starring Soprano Sonya Yoncheva and Tenor Piotr Beczała in Their Met Role Debuts Beginning November 24

The Met: Live in HD transmission of Andrea Chénier to be broadcast worldwide on December 13

New York, NY (October 28, 2025)—Tenor Piotr Beczała reunites with soprano Sonya Yoncheva in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, following their celebrated collaboration in Giordano’s Fedora in the 2022–23 season, for six performances beginning November 24, which includes The Met: Live in HD transmission on December 13. Beczała makes his Met role debut as Chénier following his performances last season as Radamès in Verdi’s Aida. Yoncheva makes her Met role debut as Maddalena di Coigny following her run as Lisa last spring in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. She will also make her Met role debut as Cio-Cio-San in the spring run of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

Principal Guest Conductor Daniele Rustioni takes the podium, and baritone Igor Golovatenko makes his Met role debut as Carlo Gérard. Later this season, he will reprise the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, opposite soprano Asmik Grigorian. Golovatenko also reunites with Yoncheva following his performance as Prince Yeletsky in The Queen of Spades last season.

Nicolas Joël’s production of Giordano’s tragedy premiered on April 6, 1996, and was last performed on the Met stage in 2014. The creative team for Joël’s production included set and costume designer Hubert Monloup and lighting designer Duane Schuler.

Andrea Chénier Broadcasts in Cinemas, on Radio, and Online

The matinee performance of Andrea Chénier on Saturday, December 13, will be transmitted live to movie theaters around the globe as part of The Met: Live in HD series.

The November 24, December 3, and December 13 performances of Andrea Chénier will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on the SiriusXM app, and audio from the November 24 and December 3 performance will be streamed live on the Met’s website. Audio from the December 13 performance will also be broadcast over The Robert K. Johnson Foundation–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.
